The spotty condition of the nickel plating on the chuck and ratchet is off-putting, but this brace works quite nicely and has gorgeous wood, with nearly all the original finish remaining. The ball bearing chuck presents a problem in finding an appplicable patent, as the jaws follow John Leland's U.S. Patent No. 1,184,758 with the jaws' follower shape built into the chuck body, but the spring anticipates Austin Stowell's U.S. Patent No. 1,880,521. The latter patent was assigned to the Stanley company. Also, the three-piece chuck shell doesn't follow either patent; the nose rides on ball bearings that bear on the knurled part; and the internal threads are cut in the smooth third piece. On top of all this confusion, the 771B model number is nowhere to be found in Randy Roeder's comprehensive catalog of Millers Falls braces.
