Note the short ptotrusion at the
left-hand end of the single jaw in the image below, right. The other
jaw has a corresponding hole, the effect being to keep the jaws
aligned, correcting a failing of the original Barber patent which the
later Stevens patent also corrects (see images at right).

This Millers Falls brace has the Barber
patent chuck, but with an added feature to ensure axial registration
between the two jaws. The Stevens patent is included here to show that
the dimple/hole combination of the present jaws is a feature that was
not a part of either original patent. Right click and select view image

sectional view of the Stevens patent chuck. The brace has no maker's
markings.
