To state the conclusion first,
the records indicate that 19.Joshua
Albert
Massey sired two groups of
children, 31 years apart.
|
In their 1908 research work,
J.G.
and E.T. Massey reported that 19.Joshua Albert Massey married
Susan
Dwyer on 30 Apr.1846, and that she had died in Mobile, Alabama.(1) They made no
mention of children by Susan Dwyer. Judge Massey notes two
children, born 1849 and 1851 in Alabama, but does not indicate their
probable mother.(2)
I believe it probable that Susan Dwyer was mother of the two children
born 1849 and 1851.
|
J.G. and E.T. Massey further
note that 19.Joshua [Albert]
Massey married, as his 2nd. wife, on 25
Jul.1877, Mary Gregory.(1)
This
seems
to
establish
that
Mary
Gregory was mother of the four
children born 1878, 1880, 1881 and 1883; and I have so listed them.
|
Because of the 31 year gap
between the two marriages of James Albert Massey, it seemed to me that
there was a strong possibility that there were two Joshua Albert
Masseys: father and son. Neither J. G. and E. T. Massey, nor
Judge Massey have even hinted a suspicion such as mine.
|
To go further, Judge Massey
writes: "... Joshua Albert Massey, born 5-1-1818, died 8-7-1886, who
married Susan C. was a minister for 31 years at Trinity Church
(Episcopal), Mobile, Alabama. A Placque and picture of him is in
the Church."(3)
This would indicate that Joshua Albert Massey had preached in Mobile
from 1855 to 1886, and seems to definitely rule out the possibility
that he would have had a son born in the 1852-1856 period.
|
Unless further research unearths
another Joshua Albert Massey to qualify as son of our 19.Joshua Albert
Massey, it seems probable that he sired these two groups of
children,
many years apart.
