August 9, 1800: William Massey
of Carlisle [Caroline ?] County, State of Maryland, for the sum of
£15 buys an 8 year old Negro boy named Robert from Noah Massey,
farmer of Kent County. Witnesses: Thom. Roberts and Wm.
Frederick. The deed is endorsed to the effect that if Noah Massey
returns the £15 with legal interest on or before the next August
20th, then the transaction shall be of no effect, meaning that this deed

Queen
Anne's County to wit: On the ninth day of August, Anno Domini one
thousand eight hundred, the
following bill of sale was brought to be recorded to wit: Know all men
by these presents that I, Noah Massey of Queen Anne's County and state
of Maryland, farmer, for and in consideration of the sum of fifteen
pounds
current money to him in hand paid by William Massey of Carlisle County
[maybe Caroline County ? - GL,III, ed.] and state aforesaid at and
before the sealing and delivery of
these presents, the receipt whereof the aforesaid Noah Massey doth
hereby acknowledge,
have granted, bargained, sold, and by these presents doth grant,
bargain, and
sell unto the said William Massey, his executors, and administrators,
and
assigns, one Negro boy eight years of age named Robert. To have and to
hold the aforesaid Negro boy above bargained and sold or mentioned or
intended to be so to the aforesaid William Massey, his executors, and
administrators, and assigns, forever and I, the aforesaid Noah
Massey, for myself, my heirs, executors, and administrators, all and
singular
[illegible] property as aforesaid unto the said William Massey, his
executors, and administrators ,and assigns, against me, the said Noah
Massey, my executors, and administrators, and against all and every
other
person and persons whatsoever shall and will warrant and forever defend
by these
presents the above-mentioned Negro boy. I, the said Noah Massey, have
put
the said William Massey in full possession by delivering to him, the
aforesaid William Massey, the aforesaid boy at the sealing and delivery
of these presents, it being the whole property bargained and sold or
mentioned or intended to be so unto him, the William Massey as
aforesaid.
In witness whereof the parties to these presents have hereunto set
their hands and seals this twenty-eighth day of July 1800. Noah Massey {seal}
Signed sealed and deliveredin presence of Thom. Roberts Wm. Frederick On the back of the original bill of sale was thus endorsed to wit: Now the true intent and meaning of this instrument of writing is this: That if the within named Noah Massey and his heirs or administrators do well and truly pay unto the said William Massey, his heirs, executors, and administrators or assigns, the within mentioned sum of fifteen pounds current money with legal interest in the same from the date and that on or before the twentieth day of August next ensuing this date, then this instrument shall be of no force or value but otherwise it shall be and remain in full force in equity and law. Signed in the presence ofWilliam Massey Thos. Roberts Queen Anne's County to wit: On 28th July 1800 personally appeared a Noah Massey before me, one of the Justices of the Peace for Kent County, and did acknowledge the within bill of sale to be his act and deed and the signature and seal hereto annexed to be purpositively his.
