Noah Massey to John Roberts, August 26, 1803

August 15, 1803 (recorded August 26, 1803): Noah Massey, of Queen Anne's County and State of Maryland, sells for £300 the 24-year-old Negro woman called Sarah and her two children John (6 years old) and James (18 months old) to John Roberts, also of Queen Anne's County.  Witnesses: [illegible signature] and Justice of the Peace Thomas Roberts.

Queen Anne's County to wit: Be it remembered that in the twenty-sixth day of August Anno Domini eighteen hundred and three the following bill of sale was brought to be recorded to wit: Know all men by these presents that I, Noah Massey of Queen Anne's County and state of Maryland, for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred pounds current money to me in hand paid by John Roberts of the same place at or before the sealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof I, the aforesaid Noah Massey, do hereby acknowledge, have granted, bargained, and sold and by these presents do sell and deliver to the aforesaid John Roberts, his heirs, executors, and administrators, one Negro woman called Sarah, about twenty four years old, one Negro boy called John, about six years old, one Negro boy called James, about eighteen months old. To have and to hold the said Negro woman Sarah and her two children, John and James, to the aforesaid John Roberts, his heirs, and assigns, forever and I, the aforesaid Noah Massey, for myself and my heirs, executors, or administrators, freely bargained and sold the Negro woman Sarah and the aforesaid two boys, John and James, against me, the aforesaid Noah Massey, [illegible] and against all and every other persons or persons whatsoever will forever hereafter [illegible] the aforesaid John Roberts, his heirs, and assigns, warrant and defend by these presents also I, the aforesaid Noah Massey, in confirmation of the above have put the aforesaid John Robertson in full possession of all the above bargained and sold Negroes at the sealing and delivery hereof. In witness whereof I, the aforesaid Noah Massey, have hereunto set my hand and seal this fifteenth day of August 1803.

On the back of the original bill of sale was thus endorsed to wit: Received August 15, 1803 of John Roberts the sum of three hundred pounds current money in full for the within consideration.

Queen Anne's County to wit: on the 18th day of August 1803 personally appeared that Noah Massey before me, one of the Justices of the Peace for said county, and did acknowledge the within bill of sale to be his act and deed and that the Negro woman Sarah and her two children, John and James, to be the right and estate of the aforesaid John Roberts, his heirs and assigns, forever.
