1814 (Recorded December 7, 1814): David Massey, free Negro of Queen
Anne's County in Maryland buys for $20.00 a one acre plot of land called
Price's Tharalin, lying next
to the road leading between Dixon's Tavern and Bullock Town, from
William Price of Thomas in Queen Anne's County. Witnesses acting
for the Crown: Justices of the Peace, Nathaniel Cacy and Jn. D. Thompson. Anne's County to wit: Be it remembered that on the seventh day of
December, eighteen hundred and fourteen, the following deed was brought
to be recorded to wit: This indenture made this fifteenth day of
November in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and fourteen between
William Price (of Thomas) of Queen Anne's County, State of Maryland of
the one part, and David Massey, free Negro of the county and state
aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the said William Price for
and in consideration of the sum of twenty dollars current money of the
state aforesaid to him in hand paid by the said David Massey before the
sealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof he, the said
William Price, doth hereby acknowledge and from every part and parcel
thereof does freely acquit, exonerate, and discharge the said David
Massey, his heirs, executors, administrators. He, the said William
Price, hath granted, bargained, and sold and by these presents doth
grant, bargain, sell, alien, enfeoff, and confirm unto the said David
Massey, his heirs and assigns, forever a part of a tract of land called
Price's Tharalin. Beginning at a red oak tree standing on the main road leading from Dixon's Tavern to Bullock Town,
and from thence runs South forty three degrees West six and three
quarters perches to intersect the eleventh line of said tract, and with
that line South thirty nine degrees, thirty minutes East twelve and one
half perches, and South forty three degrees East thirteen perches, and
from thence by a straight line to the beginning, containing one acre of
land more or less with all and singular the right, title, claim,
interest, and demand whatsoever of him, the said William Price, of, in,
and to the said acre of land aforesaid. To have and to hold the said
acre of land to the said David Massey, his heirs and assigns, forever,
and the said William Price for himself and his heirs and against all
other persons whatsoever unto the said David Massey, his heirs and
assigns, shall and will warrant and forever defend. In testimony whereof
the said William Price hath hereunto set his hand and seal the day and

fourteen personally appeared William Price ( ... ) of Queen Anne's
County, party grantor mentioned in the foregoing deed or instrument of
writing before us, the subscribers, Justices of the Peace of the State
for Queen Anne's County, and acknowledged the written deed or instrument
of writing to be his act and deed and the land and premises therein
mentioned and hereby bargained and sold to be the right and estate of
David Massey, party grantee also therein mentioned, his heirs and
assigns, forever according to the purport, true intent, and meaning of
this said deed or instrument of writing and the acts of assembly in that
