Ferrous unknown at 100X etched
There are a couple of plausible explanations of this peculiar microstructure.  Neither is complimentary to its manufacturer.  This may simply be an example of an anachronism (an antique technology or specimen).

The first photomicrograph that I made of this specimen shows the edge at 100X.

The second image also shows the edge, but at 500X.

The third photomicrograph (a greyscale image) shows an area deep in the interior at 500X.  That's not a crack in the middle of this image, by the way ...
