This is called Ounce Metal.

My two photomicrographs were made at 100X and 500X.

The "islands" in the 100X image are evidence of coring; the metal has etched into little depressions in the bright spots.  At 500X the image appears flat because the curvature of the surface isn't changing as fast across the field of view as it did at 100X's much larger field.
