A pair of lathing hatchets made by Charles Hammond of Philadelphia before 1900:  Htch-07 and Htch-08

C. Hammond lathing hatchets - octagonal poll & round pollThese two lathing hatchets were made by the same man, but quite a few years apart. The upper one, with an octagonal poll, is much more crudely forged than the lower one that has a round poll as well as a nail-pulling notch.

The two hatchets have quite similar and probably original handles, both by their shape and by the patterns of wedges securing the handles.

There are no cracks visible at either end of the tape on the handle of Htch-07, and both handles are quite securely fastened.

Compare these polls to that of Htch-04, whose poll is square, and which is different otherwise as well.

The maker's marks are similar but not identical, as seen below.
