The ball bearing chuck is
marked with the July 9, 1895, patent date. Brace is in good condition with excellent rosewood handles. Latch-pawl ratchet mechanism works fine. Note the fully-plated pad - the two-piece armor is an early stage of the plating applied to later braces. Obed Peck has the oldest patent showing a plated head in Ron Pearson's book; he may be related to the Orrin Peck who was a founder of the PS&W Co. |
The jaws don't match the ones in
the July 9, 1895, patent by which the brace is identified, but a later
patent, No. 821,687, dated May 29, 1906, has the same jaw spring as
shown here. That patent was assigned to Peck, Stow & Wilcox,
so I think these jaws are the ones supplied with the brace. I
have not found another patent showing this jaw spring, nor have I seen
the claims of the May 29, 1906, patent applied to any brace, whether
made by PS&W or not. |
