This was one of
Stanley's premier braces and the largest model.
Sixteen inch swing brace with ball-bearing chuck marked with
two US patents:
No. 1,880,521 (October 4, 1932) and No. 1,915,245 (June 20,
1933). Brace is cosmetically in good condition, darkly patinated
with little
nickel plating remaining.
Rosewood handles are excellent and the brace is mechanically excellent. |
The chuck jaws were improved
between the time the patent drawings were made and the time of
manufacture, but the rest of the ball bearing chuck looks like the
drawings. The chuck's bearings can be accessed by lifting out the
snap ring; the balls then fall out of the hole concealed by the ring,
one at a time, over a period requiring a great deal of patience &
manipulation. Do not mix the sizes of the balls - replace all or
put the remaining ones back. It helps if the balls are clean or
lubricated with light oil. |
