About half the original nickel plating has been lost to a combination of nicks & scratches followed by corrosion from exposure to moist conditions, but the surface is free of snags and loose plating. Mechanically, the brace is in good condition, with only the one replaced screw in the chuck.

There are no patent dates on this brace for the ratchet mechanism, but one or more of the patents cited for B&D-41 and B&D-42 may apply here.

U.S. Patent No. 542,448

Note: The present brace combines the jaws and springs of U.S. Patent No. 1,270,754 with the ball bearing shell of U.S. Patent No. 542,448, long expired by 1918.
