B&D-89 Price: $25.00 plus shipping The jaws of this brace fit the chuck and its shell rather loosely, but the inner base of the chuck body has rounded ends to match the profiles of the back ends of the jaws. There are minimal signs of use of this brace, with only the chuck shell marred with a few wrench marks. The jaws are undamaged and undistorted, and even the wooden handles are essentially unmarked, retaining all their original finish. There are also no signs of any patent protection for the unusual jaws design, which works around Amidon's Barber's Improved jaw design that uses a pin and cored hole to maintain alignment of the jaws. These jaws require only one pattern, as the left & right are actually identical in form and shape. The brace is of inexpensive manufacture, and it is not marked as to country of origin, which suggests that the brace was made before approximately 1890. |
