Saw-17 Condition:
Straight
and sharp, with no pitting and a blue-black patina of magnetite
remaining after I scraped off the red rust with a dull chisel. The securely attached handle has only a slightly chipped upper horn to worry about. I can read the etch well enough to find the saw model: No.7.There are three dates stamped into the left side of the handle as seen below. None are Tuesdays, insofar as I can tell, but the stamp was made with the same sort of die as the usual dates one sees on an old patented tool: The May date is probably the 19nth. The August date is the 28th or 22nd. The November date looks like the 12th. The three years ... 1876, 1874 & 1873 ? May 12, 1874 is a Disston patent date (150,678) August 29, 1876 is also a Disston date (181,648 & 181,650) There aren't any close Disston dates in November. There is an owner stamp in several places: "T. HAWKES"
