1. EBONY SMOOTH PLANE, L.OLSEN,
maker; cutter by MOULSEN BROTHERS.
This
old woodie smoother, 8-1/2 inches long and with a 1-3/4 inch wide cutter,
was described as made of rosewood, but I think it's ebony, because it is
covered all around with fine checks which are atypical of the rosewood
I see in the totes of metallic planes. Also, the dark streaks correspond
exactly with the annual growth rings, whereas the dark streaks in rosewood
usually are independent of the growth rings and cross them at unpredictable
angles. Finally, the plane is unusually heavy for its size; and the density
of ebony is nearly twice that of rosewood. (Select

The
cutter is stamped, "MOULSON BROTHERS WARRANTED CAST
STEEL" in all capital letters.
The nose of the plane has what appears to be the maker's stamp, "L.OLSEN"
also in all capital letters.
