Millers Falls
No.3 eggbeater drill.
Type 2 - Short
main handle, no crank; second example.
This is my earliest
No.3 type, in which the main spindle has been extended back towards the
main handle in order to support the idler pinion. Although this second
pinion helps to support the side thrust between the main gear and its drive
pinion, there is greater friction than necessary because the idler pinion
rotates oppositely to the spindle - a drag to use when not fully lubricated.
The screw-on cap is lignum vitae; the main handle and crank handle are
both rosewood. This combination was long universal on Millers Falls
eggbeater drills.
