Running as a Democrat, Massey was elected to the Missouri State Senate; 12th. General Assembly.
1844
Massey was re-elected State Senator to the 13th. General Assembly.
1845
Massey was elected a Member of the Missouri Constitutional Convention.
1846
Massey was elected Chief Clerk of the Missouri House of Representatives.
c.1850
Massey sought the post of Secretary of State of Missouri, then an appointive office, but lost out.
1854
Massey ran for the Missouri State Senate, but was defeated.
1856
Massey ran as a Democrat for the office of Missouri Secretary of State; was elected to a four-year term.
1860
Massey was present at the Missouri State Convention.
1860
Massey, for the second time, ran as a Democrat for the office of Secretary of State; was elected for a second four-year term.
1861
As a member of the Rebel Missouri State administration, Massey was ousted from office by Union troops; serving only about two years of his elected four-year term.
1861-1862
As a member of Missouri's "Government-in-Exile" he continued to function as Secretary of State.
1870
Massey ran as a Democrat for the office of Missouri Secretary of State, but it was felt that it was too soon to endorse an ex-Rebel, and he was defeated.
1874
Massey ran for the four-year term of office of Circuit Court clerk, but he was defeated.
1875
Massey ran for the Missouri State Constitutional Convention, and was elected.
1876
Massey served as a Member of the Constitutional Convention; helped to frame the present Missouri State Constitution.
