Non Ferrous Alloys - Lesson 3 - Second specimen
Alpha brass tubing at 500X NH3OH + H2O2 etch This cold drawn alpha brass tubing failed on standing after drawing.  The magnification is 500X, and the etchant was ammonium hydroxide - hydrogen peroxide.

What is the history of this specimen ?

Look here for the answer.

Alpha brass history
It was cold worked, annealed, and then cold worked again (note that the annealing twins are slightly distorted).

The failure was by stress corrosion cracking - probably from the combination of resifual stresses from the tube-drawing operation combined with the atmosphere in the storage area.
