Gold - copper casting at 200X
This gold-copper alloy casting was made in South America by pre-Columbian Indians.

The photomicrograph at left was taken at 200X; the one below, at 500X.

Note the severe coring.

The gold-copper phase diagram shows a continuous series of solid solutions with a minimum melting point near 50 atomic percent.
