Non Ferrous Alloys - Lesson 4 - Sixth specimen
Broken aluminum casting at 100X
This as well as the next specimen are further examples of an alloy similar to the preceding specimens.  This is a broken lever from the lid of a garbage can.

The first photomicrograph was taken at 100X; the second, at 500X.
Broken aluminum alloy casting at 500X
What path did the fracture follow ?

The phases are alpha aluminum, CuAl2, silicon, and Chinese script.

Clearly, the fracture followed the brittle interdendritic phase.

In Specimen 7 we heat treat this brittle casting.
