Unknowns - Set 1 - Eighth specimen - M.I.T.'s #500
Type 304 stainless steel at 1000X etched (greyscale)
This is a weld in a Type 304 stainless steel (18% chromium, 8% nickel, and 0.15 to 0.2% carbon).

I made both photomicrographs at 1000X (now in greyscale) and the dark spot in each image is an artifact caused by a dirty objective lens.

Which image shows the weld pool area ...
Type 304 stainless steel at 1000X (greyscale)
... and which one shows the heat-affected zone ?

What resistance to corrosion would this specimen have, and what could be done to avoid or to alleviate this bad situation ?
