The maker's
mark is "C. HAMMOND/ PHILA." over, "CAST STEEL," and the size is, "2."
At right it is clear that this wasn't very good steel ... The Directory
of American Toolmakers, edited by Bob Nelson, states that Charles Hammond
was a Philadelphia maker from 1869 to 1908 and that tools marked as shown
here were probably made by Charles before 1900, when his son joined the
business. He often abbreviated Philadelphia, " PHILADA."
The handle looks
old enough to be original.
