Tingle & Massey: Merchandising Ventures

William Tingle: Partner.  Born 1812, in Sussex Co., Del., he is said to have been, by 1832, the earliest trader into the Sarcoxie, Mo. area, and presumably was still trading there when B. F. Massey entered the scene.

6.Benjamin F. Massey: Partner.  Born 1811, in Kent Co., Md, he had been in the merchandising business as an employee of Joseph and Peter Powell, Merchant - Traders from 1831 to about 1835.  The Powells set Massey up in his own business in 1837 in Fayette, Howard Co., Mo., and his trading carried him into the Sarcoxie area in 1838 - 1839.
3; 4
Partnership: Tingle & Massey.  Tingle had been trading in the Sarcoxie area since 1832.
2
Massey, from his Fayette base, had been operating in the Sarcoxie area since 1837, and had established himself at Sarcoxie before June 1839, when he was recorded as "of Barry Co."

My educated guess would be that they joined forces in the 1838-1939 period as Tingle & Massey, Merchant - Traders, with Tingle, first into the area, as senior partner.

The earliest record of William Tingle and B.F. Massey operating as partners came when they were recorded as Assignee of a Land Entry made by Thacker Vivion; 4 Nov.1839.
10
Goods Suppliers: Peter & Joseph Powell.  The Powells has supplied Massey his stock of goods when they set him up in business in 1837 in Fayette.

The Powells also were goods suppliers to the Tingle & Massey merchandising partnership.

It seems probable that they were also the supplier to William Tingle before he and Massey became partners.

Tingle & Massey: Merchant - Traders.  The partnership appears to have prospered.  Perhaps on the strength of this prosperity, Massey on 11 Jun.1839, was married to Maria Hawkins Withers, whom he had met and courted at Boonville, when he was operating his own business out of Fayette.

In late 1839,Tingle & Massey expanded their partnership activities to include investments in real estate, as Missouri opened up State land to Land entry sales.  As a part of this Real Estate venture, they opened up a Tingle & Massey Mercantile House in Sarcoxie itself on 6 Aug.1840.  They operated this Mercantile House until 2 Jul.1842, at which time Peter and Joseph Powell and Duncan Lamont filed a Lawsuit against them to recover a debt of $5,144.37.
4
Translating the legal language of this Lawsuit, and reading between the lines of the records, this appears to be the story:  The Powells had continued to supply Tingle & Massey the goods for their Mercantile House and their Merchant - Trader activities.  But Tingle & Massey's Real Estate ventures had required more money from their profits and capital than they could afford, and they had not been able to pay the Powell Brothers bills.  To protect their interests, the Powells filed the Lawsuit.

On 28 Feb.1844, the Newton County circuit court decided this Lawsuit in favor of the Powells, and entered Judgment.  Tingle & Massey could not pay the Judgment, so the Court ordered the Real Estate holdings of Tingle & Massey sold at auction.

Partnership End.  The sale of Tingle & Massey's Real Estate assets also marked the demise of the Tingle & Massey Merchandising ventures.

B.F. Massey entered into a career in Missouri politics, did not return to a Merchandising career.

William Tingle continued as a Merchant - Trader, and was so recorded in the 1850 Newton Co., Mo. Census, and in the 1860 Jasper Co., Mo. Census.  By 1870 he was listed as "Farmer" 1
